Liposuction

How liposuction can help you to streamline your body

Liposuction is an excellent solution for removing stubborn and frustrating areas of fat that, despite efforts with diet and exercise, just do not seem to shift. Common areas that liposuction has proved effective at treating include the thighs, hips, underarms, buttocks and even the chin.

It's important to note that although the procedure removes fat it does not tighten the skin or remove cellulite. So, a careful assessment is needed to make sure that the area is suitable and there won't be loose skin at the end of the procedure. Bear in mind that if a larger quantity of fat is removed from the stomach, you may need to consider a tummy tuck to remove any excess skin and create the firm, flat stomach you desire.

Liposuction: frequently asked questions

Do I need to diet before opting for liposuction?

If you are carrying too much weight your consultant will advise you on what you need to do before you can proceed with liposuction treatment. However, if you just require the removal of fatty deposits from one or a small number of areas then it is likely you will be an ideal candidate for liposuction.

What does the liposuction procedure involve?

Liposuction involves making very small incisions in the skin and inserting a hollow tube known as a cannula. More incisions are made for larger areas. A liquid solution is injected into the problem area to make the tissues very firm to help in the procedure and also to reduce bleeding. The cannula is moved back and forth in the fat to break it up. It is connected to a strong vacumn pump by tubing which removes the fat.

The liposuction procedure is usually performed under a general anaesthetic so you will be asleep throughout. A one night stay in the hospital may be required or it may be more appropriate to just come in for the day, depending on the amount of areas that will be treated.

Modern liposuction techniques use much smaller incisions than they used to in the past.

Does the liposuction procedure leave scars?

There will be very small scars at the incision sites but these are only a couple of centimetres long. Your surgeon will endeavour to make them in places where they can be hidden, if at all possible and depending on the area of the body that is being treated.

These scars are subtle and will fade with time to your natural skin colour. Our medical team can give you advice on how best to assist the healing process.

How long will it take to recover?

As liposuction usually requires a general anaesthetic you won't feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure. You may need to stay overnight if you have several areas treated at once.

You may experience some swelling, soreness and/or bruising after the treatment, particularly around the treatment sites, which could take a couple of weeks to settle down. You will be given a compression garment to wear for a specified period of time after surgery to help your body heal and retain your new shape.

You will need a few days off work to recover from liposuction. If you are having a larger procedure, you may need up to 10 days to recover. Your Consultant will advise you on how long the recovery process is likely to take. You should be able to see your new, streamlined silhouette within a few weeks, although in some cases it can take a few months for the full results to be fully visible.

How much does liposuction cost and how long will it last?

The fees for liposuction depend on individual requirements and the number of areas to be treated.
