Tummy Tuck & Mini Tummy Tuck

There are many reasons why people choose to have a tummy tuck. Pregnancy, ageing or significant weight loss can leave you with excess skin or a sagging tummy which no amount of exercise is going to shift.

An abdominoplasty or tummy tuck can help solve this issue by removing excess skins and fatty deposits to give you a flatter, firmer appearance.

What a tummy tuck cannot do
A tummy tuck is not a weight loss operation. If you are someone carrying unwanted weight then surgery will not be effective and might even be dangerous. The ideal candidate for a tummy tuck is one who has achieved the weight they are happy with but just want to rid themselves of loose skin and tighten up their abdominal muscles to obtain a flat contour.

Tummy tuck: frequently asked questions

What happens during the procedure?

You’ll need a general anaesthetic for this procedure so will sleep throughout the operation. The surgeon will carefully make an incision around your belly button and across the lower half of your abdomen. This will allow your consultant to cut away any excess skin, tighten the muscles and change the position of the belly button so it is in a more suitable place.

You will need to spend two nights in the hospital to recover as well as take 3 weeks off work to give your body a chance to heat. It is important not to over-exert yourself during this time and avoid heavy lifting. You will experience swelling and soreness and will need to rest and recover.

The hospital will supply you with a compression garment which you must wear to provide support to the healing muscles.

Will I have a scar?

The incision across your lower abdomen will be positioned below your bikini line in the same way as a caesarean scar to minimise scar visibility. Therefore, it should not be visible when you are in underwear. The colour should fade to your natural skintone over the next twelve months.

Mini Tummy Tuck

One variation of an abdominoplasty is the mini-tummy tuck. In this case, skins is removed only from below the navel from the lower abdomen. The belly button will not have to be repositioned in order to complete this procedure and the muscles are not tightened.

Is a mini tummy tuck right for me?

If most of your excess skin and abdominal issues are below the belly button then a mini tummy tuck could be perfect for you. It is usually recommended for patients who have always been in pretty good shape or have already lost excess weight and have a health body fat percentage.

If you are considering a tummy tuck or mini tummy tuck it's important that you are in good physical health and are comfortable with your current weight. Neither procedure is suitable for someone looking to lose weight.
